how to make a molecular structure model?

Esme asked:

i need answers asap. i need to buy materials for a molecular structure project tomorrow, and i need something really cheap to use as molecules. i saw on a site how they used hard candy for the molecules, but i need something that won’t melt, something ants won’t get to. you see, this is for an exhibit, and the model will be displayed 2 days after the passing deadline, and it should still look good when it’s displayed.

i wish i could use clay, but the model might get disfigured easily…
so clay is okay? but sometimes clay can be so soft…is there any way to harden clay a bit? (i mean the clay kids play with; not the clay potters use)

Ping Pong balls? I think clay is a good idea, clay is pretty hard and should be able to last two days, depending on how large your structure is and the orientation of the structure. Or maybe you could use clay for the larger atoms and use something lighter like plasticine for the others.

Straw Molecular Model

Materials and tools

•6mm diameter straws or 4mm diameter straws
•A ruler
•A (good) pair of scissors
•Proper chemistry text book
•(Super glue)

Introduction

Straw molecular model is an educational material sample which is affordable and helpful to understand skeleton structure of molecules.
Each atom is represented by one straw or combination of several straws and these straws are connected with connector straws in order to make a molecular model. For example when you make a carbon dioxide model, first of all you should combine 4 pale green straws which represent four arms of connection of a carbon atom. Then cut out two straws which have flexible part in the middle of them. Fold them parallel then they represent oxygen atoms which have two connective arms. Connect one oxygen straw and carbon with two connectors after that connect another oxygen and carbon again. You can see straw carbon dioxide molecular model. More…
