Is there a home-made clay I could make which doesn’t rot?

I’d like to use it for a volcano model.
I’m talking about the play-dough-type stuff the kids can make, but I don’t want to have to refirgerate it.

Clay is just mud. Depending on where you live you can probably just dig it out of the garden, shape it and let it dry.
This does not need to be refrigerated, but it does need to be stored in an airtight container:
PLAYDO RECIPE
1 cup salt
2 cups plain flour
2 cups water
2 tablespoons cooking oil
4 teaspoons of cream of tartar
Place all ingredients in a pan and heat gently until it forms a lump and leaves the sides of the pan
Allow to cool thoroughly
Store in an airtight container
